Set along the tourist route between Dunsborough and Busselton, this project balances a public welcome with the practical realities of an on‑site winery. The client’s brief was clear: “an elegant, coastal style building that welcomes customers with a relaxed atmosphere.” That intent guides the building’s form and program, which includes wine sales, food preparation and service, administration areas and a boardroom—everything needed to support a busy Cellar Door for wines made from locally grown fruit.

Designed by Clayton Lindley, the building presents a sequence of steeply pitched gables and generous verandahs, their deep eaves casting shade across a timber deck that wraps the perimeter. Pale cladding and a tall, stone‑faced chimney introduce a beach‑house familiarity, while a glazed gable entry offers a transparent invitation from the driveway and gardens.

Inside, high ceilings and abundant light frame a convivial tasting room. Circular timber chandeliers hover over timber floors and a long counter, with wine barrels pressed into duty as casual tables. A mezzanine and back‑of‑house zones enable efficient service and administration without interrupting the visitor experience. The fireplace anchors quieter corners, extending the venue’s appeal across seasons and times of day.

Early acclaim for the wine has been matched by the reception to the Cellar Door, which reads as both a regional landmark and a comfortable lounge. The architecture channels coastal clarity and operational rigour into a single, hospitable address for Flametree Wines in Dunsborough, Western Australia.
