In Oakleigh, Victoria, the Estelle Residence by Patrick Cristian Gheorghiu of pcg. creates a sanctuary where Japanese-influenced minimalism and local restraint coexist. Viewed from the street, robust masonry walls and timber accents shape a calm presence, softened by the delicate verticality of timber screens and expansive glass above. The first floor appears to float above the entry, its glazing framing leafy treetops and extending natural light throughout the interiors.

The surrounding garden is structured with stone paths, gravel, and carefully pruned plantings, setting a tranquil approach that mirrors the home’s architectural poise. This seamless transition from nature to architecture deepens inside, where a restrained palette—warm timber, exposed steel, and concrete—offers tactile richness. The sculpted staircase becomes a visual anchor, its geometry both rational and elegant, linking the living spaces and underscoring the openness within.

External details, such as weatherboard cladding and the distinctive circular timber portal, gently reference the home’s suburban roots while maintaining a contemporary composure. Every surface and sightline connects indoors and out, nurturing daily rituals and family gatherings with understated calm. In 2018, this careful orchestration of space and sensibility was recognised by the HIA Award for Best Renovation and Addition under $1M.
