SJB
Architectural practice
SJB is a multidisciplinary Australian design studio with offices in Sydney and Melbourne, offering architecture, interior design, urban design and planning services. Its work covers residential, commercial, hospitality, education, community and public-sector environments, with projects ranging from individual buildings and interiors to development applications, masterplans, precinct renewal and public realm improvements. The practice focuses on creating built environments that are context-aware, durable and responsive to the needs of the people who use them, with an emphasis on design quality, practical delivery and long-term social and environmental outcomes.
The studio works with a broad mix of public and private clients, including councils, developers, institutions and community organisations. Its planning services include pre-lodgement advice, development application preparation, authority liaison, and the management of site-specific considerations such as access, parking, servicing, community land requirements, and statutory constraints. In urban design, SJB places importance on the relationship between people and place, using evidence-based and data-informed methods to support more equitable, resilient and sustainable cities. Its broader portfolio reflects a capacity to operate across scales, from detailed interior environments to neighbourhood- and precinct-level planning.
SJB’s values centre on collaboration, equity, social responsibility and environmental awareness. The studio places importance on designing for difference, choice and connection, particularly in education and community settings, and recognises the role of Country, local culture and public life in shaping meaningful places. Its distinguishing attributes include an award-winning body of work, multidisciplinary capability, and a commitment to context-sensitive design that balances creativity with planning and delivery requirements. The practice has also expressed commitments to workplace equity, gender balance in leadership, fairness, respect, and belonging, and supports recognition of the planning sector through initiatives such as the Dr Helen Proudfoot Women in Planning Award and the NSW Awards for Planning Excellence.
